Friday Finds (12 June)

Friday Finds, is a collection of recommended reads, resources and creative projects from the web. Are you the owner of an online platform or engaged in a creative project that touches on topics of life, faith and culture? Please get in touch. I would love to hear about it!

1. The Beloved Vine – Abide Cover Studio Recording

Earlier this year, I collaborated with Jane Kang to write a modern hymn titled Abide. She has rerecorded a cover with The Beloved Vine. We hope this version blesses you!

2. George Floyd and Me

Christian Hip-Hop artist Shai Linne shares a letter that he wrote to a white sister-in-christ with the hopes to promote empathy, unity and understanding in the body of Christ. Christ calls us to “mourn with those who mourn” (Romans 12:15), so spare a moment to walk in the shoes of your black brother in Christ. Like me, you might learn something new.

3. Let’s Talk: A New Podcast For Women

I’m so excited for this! Let’s Talk, hosted by Jackie Hill Perry, Melissa Kruger, and Jasmine Holmes, is a new podcast for women. Over nine weeks, Jackie, Melissa and Jasmine will seek to apply biblical wisdom to everyday life and cover topics such as contentment, decision making, social media, overcoming church hurt, and more.

4. Quality Christian Music: 14 Artists to Watch

Curated by Brett Mccracken, here are 14 newer, lesser-known Christian artists and worship bands that should be on your radar.

5. In Good Faith: The Three Worlds

Asian Australian Chong Shao and Asian American Dan Shih have launched In Good Faith, a brand new podcast that talks about society and culture from a Christian lens. In this episode, Chong and Dan share their thoughts on George Floyd’s killing, how (not) to use social media during this time, and explores the framework for explaining society’s posture towards Christianity: Positive World, Neutral World and Negative World.

6. Why You Should Ditch Your Digital Bible

Matt Smith encourages us to consider the cost of convenience. He writes: “…we need to use digital Bibles less, not more, lest we let our instinctive impulse for convenience reinforce a program of behaviour that robs us of opportunities to grow in our understanding of Scripture.”

7. Unmasking Racism, Starting with Me

Gene Joo writes honestly about his experiences growing up as one of the only Asian kids in a predominantly brown community, his own struggle with racism and how God moved him into a posture of repentance.

He writes: “As a 4-year-old I thought “chino” was Spanish for “Gene.” I asked my mom how everyone knew my name. She said they were just teasing me, and that was one of my earliest memories of shame and anger.”

8. How Can I Pray for My Oppressed Neighbour?

According to Tim St. John, prayer is one vital way we respond when a spotlight has been placed on the oppressed. Here is a helpful template for those who feel compelled to pray.
